  9. ARTISOFT ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF LANTASTIC(R) VERSION 5.0

  12. Administration, New Windows Network Scrapbook

  14. (TUCSON, AZ -- February 22, 1993) -- Artisoft, Inc. 
  15. announced today a new version of its network operating system,
  16. LANtastic v5.0, which is scheduled to ship in March. This new version
  17. of the award-winning LANtastic Local Area Network now incorporates
  18. additional features, including multiplatform connectivity for
  19. corporate workgroups as well as enhanced network administration,
  20. security, and printing capabilities. A new LANtastic(R) for
  21. Windows(TM) scrapbook feature facilitates the exchange of text,
  22. graphics and audio information across the network.

  25. support, continue to make LANtastic v5.0 one of the leading peer-to-
  26. peer network operating systems on the market today," commented Jack
  27. Schoof, Artisoft's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "LANtastic
  28. v5.0 still offers the ease-of-use, flexibility and low cost that
  29. smaller businesses demand, while maintaining the power, security and
  30. connectivity support to handle larger networks."

  32. Improved Multiplatform/Workgroup Support Enhancements to the
  33. LANtastic v5.0 network increase user support to 500 users per server
  34. -- up from the 300- user support found in v4.1.
  35.  
  36. LANtastic users can now bridge to OS/2(R) HPFS, WORM and other non-
  37. DOS drives. Users share these drive connections with the LANtastic
  38. network by setting up the connection as a LANtastic shared resource.
  39.  
  40. Additionally, LANtastic v5.0 provides bridging capabilities to
  41. UNIX(R) NFS, allowing a LANtastic server that is also a UNIX client
  42. (running LANtastic(R) for TCP/IP software or other UNIX client
  43. software) to serve as a bridge to the rest of the LANtastic network.
  44. A LANtastic server running as a NetWare(R) client can also be set up
  45. as a NetWare bridge so that users on the LANtastic network can access
  46. the NetWare server's files. This can be done by installing an
  47. additional adapter to the LANtastic server and appropriate NetWare
  48. workstation files or by running LANtastic(R) for NetWare(R) software.

  50. The new NetBIOS provided with LANtastic v5.0 now includes routable
  51. packets that allow users to connect different types of networks such
  52. as ARCNET, ethernet and serial port networks together in a single
  53. LANtastic network. An IPX routing option allows the use of Novell
  54. IPX-compliant routers. A new global resource feature permits users
  55. who login to only one server to use multiple servers' resources,
  56. easing network resource management.

  58. Enhanced Network Administration 
  59. LANtastic v5.0 now allows administrators to set up all user accounts
  60. on a single server, which can share the user account information with
  61. other servers. This remote accounts feature makes it easier to set up
  62. and maintain individual accounts, wild card accounts and Access
  63. Control List (ACL) groups because they are all stored in one place.
  64. A remote server management feature enables users to control the
  65. server without leaving their desks. Users can edit a remote server's
  66. accounts or resources as if they were using the server's keyboard and
  67. viewing its screen. A new batch despooling feature allows users to
  68. despool commands to a remote server from a local PC, and specify the
  69. date and time when these commands will be executed. This is useful if
  70. a user has a list of commands, such as a backup sequence, to queue up
  71. on a server.

  73. Powerful Security
  74. Additional security features extending to the individual file level
  75. now include ACL Groups. ACL Groups allow multiple users, such as
  76. users within a particular department, to have the same privileges
  77. regarding particular files on servers. Each user's individual account
  78. can be assigned specific additional access rights in addition to
  79. those linked to the ACL Group. ACL security can also be extended to
  80. individual files and groups of files located on a shared resource.

  82. Additional Feature Enhancements
  83. LANtastic v5.0's disk caching program, LANcache, now gives users many
  84. new features to help speed the performance of network servers and
  85. workstations. Users are able to cache multiple drives in a single PC,
  86. specify different LANcache sizes for DOS and Windows, and configure
  87. LANcache to use as little as 10K of RAM.

  89. With the "auto-retry on disconnect" feature, LANtastic v5.0 will now
  90. automatically attempt to re- establish a broken server connection.
  91. Deferred NET LOGIN and NET USE commands allow users to set up
  92. connections to several servers even when the servers are not
  93. currently running. This feature will allow users to automatically
  94. login to the servers when the servers come on-line.

  96. Improved printing features include delayed despooling, which allows 
  97. users to specify the date and time for printing; support for COM3 and
  98. COM4; and remote despooling, which allows a server's queue to be
  99. serviced by multiple remote printers.

  101. Text, Graphics And Voice Sharing Across The Network
  102. LANtastic v5.0 also offers Windows(TM) users important new features
  103. including the LANtastic for Windows Scrapbook, voice chat, network
  104. communication with LAN Radio(TM) and voice error messages.

  106. The network scrapbook feature allows users to share text, graphics
  107. and sound items across the network. The scrapbook can be used locally
  108. or shared with other LANtastic users, and security can be set up to
  109. protect items in the scrapbook. Users can be granted access to
  110. information through the scrapbook and receive new information when
  111. the scrapbook is updated at its source. With the Artisoft Sounding
  112. Board(R), users can access the voice chat feature for real-time voice
  113. communication between two PCs, and use LAN Radio for multiple-channel
  114. "CB radio-like" communications across the network. Users can also
  115. create voice error messages using the Artisoft Sounding Board.
